What is an indoor air conditioner?

An indoor air conditioner is the same as an outdoor package or split system, with one exception. In the condensing section, air movement is provided by a centrifugal belt drive blower. The condenser air is ducted to and from a louver in an outside wall.

What is a Splittable package?

The refrigerant circuit is provided with re-sealable refrigerant fittings. These allow the units to be split without losing the refrigerant charge. This is very important when the units are being used in a renovation or replacement job when the units need to go thru existing doorways and on service elevators.

What type of applications are these units used for?

These units are ideal for renovation projects, replacement units and for adding spot cooling. The type of applications vary and include offices, conference rooms, restaurants, bars, animal shelters, warehouses, laboratories, lobbies, retail spaces, sports venues, banks, manufacturing facilities, night clubs, casinos, elevator rooms, clinics, etc.

Can the units be installed split?

Yes, the units can be installed as a split system. This is beneficial from several angles. The evaporator can be located near the space being conditioned, while the condensing section can be located near the outside wall. This helps to minimize the amount of ducting required and the associated heat loss / gain. In an existing structure it is easier to run just the refrigerant tubing than long runs of ductwork. The distance that the units can be split varies based on the tonnage and the compressor power supply. Additionally, it may be desirable not to have a water-cooled unit located directly above expensive equipment or computers.

Do the units require any special training to be installed or serviced?

Typically there is no special training required. The United CoolAir units do not contain any proprietary control boards. Therefore, no special tools or skills are required. Any qualified HVAC contractor should be able to install the units and service them. However, on those units that utilize a microprocessor control, some knowledge of the controls before hand is beneficial.

What unit configurations are available?

Unit configuration varies with each product family. In general there are air-cooled and water-cooled units. Air source and water source heat pumps are available. Units can be provided as horizontal or vertical floor mounted. Specific products are available for 100% outside air (DOAS) as well as variable air volume (VAV). Any of the units can have the standard sheet metal configuration modified to help tailor the unit air paths to the specific application. A wide variety of options are also available to provide a unit designed for the specific requirements, rather than attempting to force a commodity type unit into the application and not getting the desired results.
